Well, i guess the problem is ours. I must say i am a bit dissapointed with these setlists. I believe the shows were great and that the band is doing great and that we the public had HIGH expectations on this and sorry Tom, but you are good in not giving us what we expect :) and even if new songs are included the setlist for these shows does not bring anything new. No thrilling moment besides the new songs. Duets and backsingers  are no brave moves...About the new songs i am very curious but it looks like people don't like to coment on that these days. The only review i could read where the new songs were mentioned said it sucked. It said it was more of the lame and not thrilling at all VP songs...i don't know. What i sure would like to read is more opinions on that. Or if any better a recording of it...am i being too greedy?!

The new songs? IMHO:

- "Dark Sets In" is just rubbish. No idea what the lyrics are, but judging from the performance there's supposed to be some spooky stuff, otherwise I cannot explain the ATROCIOUS choir stuff in there. And that wasn't the worst of it. It clearly sounds like a song they've been working on for a long time and refuse to abandon, despite it being patently rubbish.

- "I Gave Love": benefit of the doubt. Has a bit of potential, but could very well be mediocre at best in the end. It didn't annoy me, but I can't say it gripped me.

- "Paper Bones" is a mess. It tries to be funky and a bit rocky, and feels forced all the way through.

Am I being harsh? Probably, but after not liking at least half of VP, I hate that the three songs they premiered were lukewarm at best ("I Gave Love"), or left a bad taste. This was a kick-ass band that seriously rocked, and then completely lost it when it came to the new songs.

That said: these two concerts left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand: they were in amazing shape, that one dude that helped out on guitar and trombone and percussion was crazy talented, the choir girls were mostly OK (though nowhere as good as the choir they had a decade ago at Werchter, IIRC the same one that's on "Nothing Really Ends"), seeing Karin perform with dEUS on "Slow" was stunning, and I even put up with that dick from Snow Patrol because I got to hear "Hotellounge".

But on the other the two shows were a bit too much themed like "two sides of a coin": really rocking on Friday, more quiet on Saturday. I wish there had been more of a mix.

Also, please guys, MORE ADVENTURE. 80% of these playlists were songs that had been regulars during the tour last year. Where the f#ck was "The Magic Hour" (played in Enschede)? And how about playing "One Advice, Space"? "Disappointed In The Sun"? "Nightshopping"?

And I still love "Theme From Turnpike", but seeing as that Mauro's "laugh" from the live version of that song has already become a song of its own, can't we have a different outtro? Like back in the old days, when you'd quote from pop hits for instance.

That said, I've seen some FANTASTIC guitar playing by Mauro, and I loved it when he was at the mike.

BTW I've filmed a bit on Saturday (approx. 30 sec of each song), I expect the audio to be crap but I'm hoping the video is good enough. Filmed with my Kodak Zi6, FYI. Uploading to YouTube right now, will post links once I'm done.

These are my videos from the Saturday show. I was in the middle of the audience, on the right side of the security pathway, approximately halfway between the stage and the mixing booth.

The Kodak Zi6 is a small device, intended for making home movies, so don't expect fancy quality. Also, I held it up and tried to be steady, but most of the time I still moved, simply because the music moved me but also because the audience was pushing against me etc.

Videos were made with a Kodak Zi6, set to record at HD60. Video format is AVC, 1280x720 (so 16:9), 60 frames per second. Audio is AAC, 128 Kbps CBR, 48.0 KHz, 16 bits, mono. Original file container is QuickTime MPEG-4 MOV.

The YouTube links point directly to the HD-format of the video.
If you want the "normal" version: remove the "&hd=1" from the URL.
If you want the HQ-version: replace "&hd=1" with "&fmt=18".

Please note that if these videos upset the dEUS folks, just let me know and I'll remove the videos. They are merely for entertainment purposes and to show everybody else how awesome this band is.

1. Smokers Reflect : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SznWG7D8Ow&hd=1
2. Eternal Woman : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWyJb0TxSRY&hd=1
3. Nothing Really Ends : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Q1T9XZSYVo&hd=1
4. Bad Timing : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bn8nmLWDoso&hd=1
5. I Gave Love : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5z8PBsdrCM&hd=1 (I should also have taped the ending, when the girl choir joined the band upfront and did some karate-moves and sang "uh-oh" -- but I didn't)
6. What We Talk About (When We Talk About Love) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2AIUOce43M&hd=1
7. Paper Bones : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNWQm739f8g&hd=1
8. Pocket Revolution : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBbQ0hvhyJ4&hd=1
9. Let's See Who Goes Down First : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlWepDUl91M&hd=1
10. Instant Street : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op9uAk2i2tQ&hd=1 (At the end of the video, you can hear the audience singing the guitar riff and they're louder than the PA.)
11. Fell Off The Floor, Man : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2blgTXFi5w&hd=1
12. If You Don't Get What You Want : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csxoacR4JM4&hd=1
13. The Architect : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nl0DcWcAWeg&hd=1
14. Oh Your God : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fx-2jysgmo&hd=1 (check out what the girl choir is doing in the background!)
15. For The Roses : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_kQLD4JCO8&hd=1 (still processing!)

All videos in the correct order in one playlist: http://bit.ly/yWXTn (this one is NOT in HD!)

There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do an all-HD playlist, this is sort of a workaround: http://www.youtube.com/p/819C7E60F6A39E52&fs=0&hd=1 (which is basically a playlist for an embedded player, so the YouTube player will most likely completely fill your browser screen if you click this link). Please note that this version of the playlist is in HD, so you'll need a fast PC + fast internet connection.

Oh, and I wouldn't mind some feedback if you like the videos. At first glance they're way better than I'd expected them to be, even the sound is not that bad. Feeling really stupid now for not bringing the camera on Friday.

If you're wondering why I only taped clips and not full songs: sticking my camera up for 30-60 secs wasn't that much of an issue for me, but I also wanted to enjoy the show itself. Also, the Zi6 runs on AA batteries, and I've had some odd experiences with it: sometimes I have to refresh them a lot, and sometimes not. Actually on Saturday I put in a fresh pair just before the show (Aldi-brand batteries, BTW) and never had to change them. I filmed more things afterwards and took some pictures and they were still OK. Meanwhile some major brands (who are more expensive) run out almost immediately -- go figure.

Most popular videos so far: "Oh Your God" has 21 views, "Paper Bones" also 21, and "I Gave Love" 35. Rest a dozen or less each. 8O

thanks bassjunkie.

and about the show: in my opinion it wasn't as good as the one they performed the day before. and why? because they could have picked better songs, they could've dropped fell off the door, pocket revolution & instant street because i've already heard those the day before.
and they began with three soft songs, which is tricky on a festival. and i'm more fan of guitars than of soft songs. above that they played what we talk about & ended with the architect. what we talk about can be skipped and the architect is not an ending.
but there were also positive points: if you don't get what you want rocked as hell, just as let's see who goes down first [although i couldn't hear alan singing] and oh your god. on top of that the new song [i gave love] impressed me with the heavy backing vocals.

so, this review is shorter than the other one i wrote, just because the first night impressed me more than this one. and the fact this was the first dEUS-gig without suds 'n' soda: hoorah!
it would be bad if a band couldn't do a livegig without one particular song. like nirvana [think you know them ] didn't play smells like teen spirit anymore; props!
and the fact they invited de jeugd van tegenwoordig... it's maybe weird that a belgian rockband is joined by a dutch hiphopact, but i think that makes it even more special. i think there would be no dutch band who'd dare doing this, especially not with de jeugd van tegenwoordig. and they're not that bad; their beats [made by de neger des heils a.k.a. bas bron] are varied, funky & danceable. on top of that their lyrics are very innovative and creative, or so. what they do with the dutch language really broadens it. they expiriment with language just as dEUS expirimented with pop/rock-music in the mid 90's.
and of course, we all look with nostalgic eyes and listen with melancholic ears to that time when they created their first records, but now they're older and you can't expect them to approach [making] music as they did back then.
